Managing Your Company’s Expenses

I have worked in Accounts payable and receivable as well as run my own business and one very important thing I learned was if you don’t manage your expenses you can lose money, no matter how many sales you have. Learning how to manage your expenses will allow your company to save up for new equipment or expand. Let’s face it; a company has to be able to turn a profit to compete in today’s economy.

One very common mistake for companies is waiting until the last minute to pay bills. Think about how you treat your slow-paying customers. A great way to deal with this is finding those vendors who will negotiate longer payment terms and try to pay them a week before the payment term ends.

Review your companies shipping policies and companies. Companies that ship massive amounts of products per day can receive as much as 30% off the fee if they only use one shipping company. If your company ships products with in a 20 to 30 mile radius of your company it may be cheaper to have an employee deliver the product and pay the employee 33 to 40 cents a mile.

Another great way to cut costs is to shop around for better deals or companies that have more than one of the products you need.  Most of the time business owners do not have time to shop around. Appointing someone to find new vendors can save you a lot of time. The best option is to locate vendors with multiple products your company uses. Combining orders will cut down on shipping costs, processing time and paper work.

Discover exactly how many employees your company needs to complete its goals. Over half the companies in America have more employees than they need. Remember it is more costly to bring in temporary help than to pay employees overtime.

Your employees are an important factor in managing expenses. For example if you encourage your office staff to cut down on paper waste or saving power, they will normally oblige. A simple option is to use the backs of misprinted paper for notes.

Review all the aspects of your company and see if there are any extra expenses that can be cut. Organization and research will help your company produce more profit without affecting the product or customer service.
